Sustainability in the tea industry is an increasingly important focus as both environmental and social impacts are being recognized. Tea cultivation, often in ecologically sensitive areas, can contribute to deforestation, soil degradation, and water scarcity if not managed responsibly. As consumers demand more ethically sourced products, many tea producers are turning to sustainable farming practices, such as organic cultivation, agroforestry, and water conservation techniques. Fair trade certifications and improved working conditions are also a key aspect of sustainability, ensuring fair wages and better livelihoods for workers. By prioritizing environmental protection and social equity, the tea industry is moving toward a more sustainable future, benefiting both the planet and its people.

At our annual North American Tea Conference, we proudly offer a platform for members of the tea industry to showcase their remarkable sustainability efforts. The purpose of these awards is to:

  • Celebrate exceptional contributions that go beyond traditional business metrics, recognizing efforts that enhance the health of the industry, improve environmental practices, and positively impact the lives of those who work within the industry or are connected to it.

  • Share these impactful initiatives across the tea industry, fostering a sense of shared responsibility and broadening collective knowledge about the current state and future potential of sustainability within the sector.

  • Inspire others to adopt the "above and beyond" mindset of the award recipients, encouraging them to implement similar practices and advance the goal of elevating tea to the status of a "hero crop" — one that supports environmental and social sustainability at every stage of production.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are broadly accepted as a comprehensive "checklist" for sustainable development, and as such, we in the tea industry recognize them as highly relevant categories for our sustainability awards and efforts. This alignment with the SDGs ensures that the efforts recognized here not only advance the tea industry but contribute meaningfully to global sustainability objectives.
